Synopsis: Although Liza Elliot is at the top of her field as the successful editor of a fashion magazine, her mysteriously profound lack of fulfillment frightens her into psychoanalysis. The ensuing exploration of the psychological implications of dreams makes for the most intelligent, stylish and theatrical of musicals. Uniquely structured like a straight play, the arresting score arrives in extended interludes that dramatize Liza's dreams. MAJOR ROLES ALSO AVAILABLE FOR NON SINGING ACTORS.
Liza Elliot – 30s to 40s, editor of fashion magazine Allure. Stern, strong willed, but reaching the end of her rope. Must play a range from stern matron to glamour queen. Strong, but no Broadway belting, please. Middle C to E on staff.
Dr. Alexander Brooks – any age, Liza's psychoanalyst, laid back, unorthodox in his approach. Major non singing role.
Maggie Grant – 40's, fashion editor of Allure, and Liza's best friend. Earthy, sarcastic sense of humor. Major non-singing role.
Charley Johnson – late 20's to early 30's, advertising manager of Allure. Cocky, charming, and very ambitious. Liza's chief adversary at the office. Very light character singing, mid range.
Allison Du Bois, any age, fashion columnist, outrageous, self absorbed, obsessed with staying 'chic'. Major non singing role.
Kendal Nesbitt – 40s to 50s, owner of Allure, debonair, but fraying at the edges. Liza's married lover. Major non-singing role.
Randy Curtis – 20's, major movie star dripping with sex appeal and insecurities. Strong tenor voice. Rich baritone, B flat under middle C to Eflat in staff.
Russell Paxton – 20's, fashion photographer of Allure, flamboyant, great at what he does and knows it. (role originated by Danny Kaye) Middle C to E on staff, possibly G a 3rd higher.
Elinor Foster – 20's, Liza's personal secretary. Focused, cool under pressure. Strong singer. E flat to D in staff.
Miss Stevens – 20's, Allure's receptionist to the stars, very attractive, very flighty. Some singing.
Young Liza Elliot – 7 to 9, good actor/singer with some dance skills.
Roles for up to 6 children, boys and girls.
Chorus of 12 adults, six men, six women, all with solos and/or decent speaking roles, playing Young Liza's parents, friends, teacher, fashion models, Liza's High School sweetheart, etc. Circus skills a plus. Top A above staff. Must be comfortable with 4-5 part singing.
