Open Shakespeare Intensive

at Alec Wild in St. Louis City, MO

Do you want to re-work your Shakespeare monologues, or get comfortable with your new one? On Saturday September 17th, I’m holding two Shakespeare Intensives – these are great opportunities to work with a professional director in preparation for auditions, or to get some new input on your Shakespeare work. I’ll be doing two four-hour sessions (10am – 2pm, and 2:30pm – 6:30pm), and will only accept 5 students per session, so you can be sure that your monologue will receive plenty of time on its feet. We’ll work to make sure your monologues are on text, clear, specific, and physically active.

We’ll start with an intensive examination of the text – what you’re saying, how you’re saying it, to whom, and why. Then we’ll go directly into working the monologue, moment-to-moment, making sure every second is clear and specific. Finally, we’ll work it in full several times, getting feedback from the others in the workshop. Please be off-book, or at least extremely familiar with your piece if it’s new for you.

About me: Alec Wild was Founder and Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed, award-winning Folio Theater in Chicago, where he directed Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Hamlet, and Henry IV: Part 1, Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, George F. Walker’s Zastrozzi, and the Midwest premiere of Frontiers, by Valery Daemke, Doreen Dunn, Kathleen Gaffney, and Nancy Sellin. As the recipient of a 1997 Fox Fellowship, Mr. Wild traveled to Saint Petersburg, Russia, to work as the Assistant Director of The Revizor Project, an international, cross-cultural effort to examine the work of Vsevolod Meyerhold, and to re-create his seminal 1926 production of Gogol’s The Inspector General. While in Russia, he studied Directing and Biomechanics at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Theater. Most recently, he has directed the critically acclaimed Taming of the Shrew at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, Titus Andronicus and Richard II for Milwaukee Shakespeare, Macbeth for the UMN/Guthrie Training Program, and The Winter’s Tale, Richard III, Twelfth Night, Taming of the Shrew, The Tempest, and Othello at The Great River Shakespeare Festival, which he founded and where he currently serves as Associate Director. Mr. Wild has taught and directed at American Conservatory’s Advanced Training Program in San Francisco, University of Minnesota/Guthrie Conservatory, Fordham University, and Manhattanville College in New York. He was a guest lecturer on Shakespeare at New York University, an Adjunct Professor in the Theater Department at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Head of the M.F.A. Directing Program at Illinois State University. He holds an M.F.A. in Directing from the Yale School of Drama, and a B.F.A. in Acting from Chicago’s Goodman School of Drama.

Shakespeare Intensive cost: $40 per session. Please specify whether you’d like the morning or the afternoon session, and what piece(s) you’ll be working.

Location: 4th Floor Studio, 915 Olive Street, St. Louis.

Maximum participants: 5 per session. You may participate in both sessions if you’d like.
