SOUTH PACIFIC premiered on Broadway on April 7, 1949, and during its initial run, won countless awards including nine Tony Awards, most significantly Best Musical, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Considered by many critics the finest musical ever written, the show is loved for its memorable characters, fabulous music score, and extraordinary story that artfully combines hilarious comedy and poignant drama. The revival played to sold-out houses since its first preview in March 2008 and swept that year’s Tony Awards, winning seven honors including Best Musical Revival. It ended its record breaking run in 2010, making it the longest running Broadway revival of a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical. The musical’s continuing popularity proves that its portrayal of Americans stationed in a tropical paradise during wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949. The score’s memorable songs include such musical theatre classics as “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Younger than Springtime,” “Bali Ha’i,” and “A Wonderful Guy.”
