Student Open call for THE SECRET GARDEN

at COCA Theatre Company in University City, MO

Seeking Young Actors (ages 12-18) for COCA’s acting ensemble that will present a highly theatrical adaptation of the classic book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and adapted by Pamela Sterling. The Secret Garden is the winner of the American Alliance Distinguished Play Award. Directed by Shanara Gabrielle, performances are January 27 and 28 at COCA.


Auditions are being held: Friday, Nov 18, 2011 (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM) and Saturday, Nov 19, 2011 (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM). Actors should prepare a monologue and bring a resume and headshot/photo. If auditioning for the role of The Robin, please bring an audition piece to play on your instrument. If you are comfortable performing in a dialect (British, Yorkshire, Cockney, East Indian), please do so at your audition.

Seeking the following roles – *all actors should be comfortable learning dialects for all roles.
Mary Lennox, 10 years old (seeking very strong actress who can carry a show, 15-18 years old to play younger)
Mrs. Medlock, housekeeper at Misselthwaite Manor (seeking character actress)
Martha Sowerby, dear friend to Mary and housemaid at Misselthwaite Manor (seeking strong actress, 16-18 years old)
Dickon Sowerby, Martha’s 14 year old brother (seeking energetic, strong young actor)
Archibald Craven, master of the Manor, Mary’s guardian (seeking strong character actor)
Colin Craven, Mary’s 10 year old cousin (seeking very strong actor to play a fragile 10 year old)
Ben Weatherstaff, gardener at Misselthwaite Manor (seeking strong character actor, comfortable with dialects)
Doctor Craven, Colin’s Doctor and Mr. Craven’s cousin
The Robin, a bird, Mary’s friend, a vital part of the story telling (seeking an actor who is comfortable with lots of stage time and who plays a musical instrument VERY WELL, preferably flute, but open to other instruments as well)
Ensemble, seeking strong actors, interested in exploring physical work and creating the wonderful world of The Secret Garden. All cast will have a large amount of stage time as well as speaking roles.

COCA Theatre Company produces a season of plays and musicals each year featuring student performers. The show is cast by audition and fully produced in either COCA’s Founders’ Theatre. Students rehearse at COCA on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, from Dec. 4th through January 26th. If cast, students must pay a $195 participation fee; need-based financial aid is available for those who qualify. CTC is a company for serious and developing young actors and is led by professional directors, designers, music directors, and choreographers.
