Casting for FIVE WOMEN WEARING THE SAME DRESS
at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park in St. Louis City, MO
Shades of "Sex and the City" and "Designing Women"! The lives, loves and misadventures of five bridesmaids are explored in the comedy “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress.”
Open auditions will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 14 and 15, at 7 p.m. in the Green Room in the Mildred E. Bastian Center for the Performing Arts at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, 5600 Oakland Ave. No appointments necessary.
The play will be performed four times Feb. 23-26, with show times at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. It is free admission.
Roles are available for five women, primarily in their 20s and early 30s, and one man, around 29 (one scene). All must speak in Southern accents. Written by Alan Ball, who created “Six Feet Under” and “True Blood,” and won an Oscar for the “American Beauty” screenplay, the 1993 work is set at a society wedding in Knoxville, Tenn. During an ostentatious reception at an old-money estate, five reluctant bridesmaids hide out in the upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below. As the afternoon wears on, these five very different women joyously discover a common bond in this wickedly funny, irreverent and touching celebration of the women's spirit.
Auditions will consist of cold readings of the script in groups onstage and a brief interview with director Lynn Venhaus. Rehearsals will not begin until after the holidays. The roles are open to anyone living in the metropolitan area, and it is a non-Equity production.
The characters include:
Frances, a painfully sweet but sheltered Christian fundamentalist -- naive, age 21. She's a cousin of the bride.
Meredith, the rebellious younger sister of the bride. She's athletic, edgy, a wild child, age 22. You could say she has attitude to spare.
Trisha, the bride's sorority sister and lifelong friend, a worldly woman who knows how to be beautiful. But she's jaded and cynical. Has her eye on a younger bad-boy usher. She's 32.
Georgeanne, an unhappily married lady. She acts out in outrageous ways. She's an old school chum of the bride and Trisha.
Mindy, the lesbian sister of the groom. She's cheerful but gets in her share of zingers, a lot of wisecracks. She's in her late 20s/early 30s.
Tripp, whose real name is Griffin Lyle Davenport III. He's a cousin of the groom, age 29, and an usher. He’s is only in the final scene.
