West End Players Auditions
at West End Players Guild in St. Louis City, MO
West End Players Guild will hold auditions for the last two plays of its 2012-2013 season on Saturday, August 11, at 12 noon at the theatre in the Union Avenue Christian Church, 733 Union Boulevard (just north of Delmar).
The plays to be cast are:
- John Morogiello’s Engaging Shaw, directed by Robert Ashton. Roles are available for two men and two women, age range late 30s to early 40s. Show dates are February 8-17, 2013; tech week will be February 3-7.
- Michael Hollinger’s Opus, directed by Jerry McAdams. Roles are available for four men (35-55) and one woman (20s). Show dates are April 5-14, 2013; tech week will be March 31-April 4.
Engaging Shaw follows the real-life courtship of George Bernard Shaw and Charlotte Payne-Townshend, the woman he pursued until she caught him. The play brims with the wit and ego of Shaw, creating what the New York Times called “a charming romantic comedy featuring four razor-sharp tongues. If there’s a minute of the play that’s less than clever, you’ll be hard-pressed to find it.”
Opus is a tale of sex, drugs and chamber music, in which a world-class string quartet takes a chance on a gifted but relatively inexperienced young woman. With only a few days to rehearse a grueling Beethoven masterpiece, the four struggle to prepare their highest-profile performance ever—a televised ceremony at the White House. Their rehearsal room becomes a pressure-cooker as passions rise, personalities clash, and the players are forced to confront the ephemeral nature of their life’s work. Opus premiered on Broadway in 2007 and won numerous outstanding new play awards.
Each show will be performed seven times, on Friday and Saturday evenings, Sunday matinees and Thursday evening of the second week. West End Players Guild is a non-Equity professional company; all actors will be paid a stipend. No appointment is required for the auditions. Auditioners are asked to bring a resume and a headshot for each director for whom they wish to read. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the scripts; sides will be provided at the audition. Ample free parking is available on the parking lot behind the church; auditioners should use the basement entrance to the theater from the parking lot.
