COURSE DESCRIPTION
[LEVEL 1: INTRODUCTION TO IMPROVISATION] This course is designed for anyone interested in learning the craft of scene-based improvisation. Through scenic games and exercises, the class will embrace the fundamentals of listening, risk-taking, working as a group and agreement. The main goals are to overcome fear and be open to growth as a performer. We will not look to inject our scenes with "funny" ideas but rather find the patterns and relationships that will build to a comedic crescendo. This class will not only introduce students to acting and comedy, but help those interested in building confidence for any type of public speaking and/or presentation in front of an audience.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Kevin McKernan has been involved with improvisation for over a decade, starting at St. Louis University High under legendary theater teacher Joseph Schulte. During his four years at Indiana University, he served as both actor and director of the improv and sketch troupe ‘The Original Full Frontal Comedy’ and spent a summer interning at The Second City. McKernan then moved to Chicago where he studied with some of the art form’s best teachers, including TJ Jagodowski, Al Samuels, Susan Messing, Dan Izzo and Mick Napier. While in Chicago, he also co-founded the independent team ‘The Bryan Room’ and started a high school improv program in addition to his work as an English instructor at Loyola Academy and Northwestern University. McKernan has taught improvisation to students of all ages at Washington University, Stages St. Louis, St. Louis University, SLU High, the Bloomington Area Arts Council, The Actors' Studio of St. Louis, and ComedySportz-Indianapolis. Currently, he is trying to start a full-time improv training center and theater in St. Louis.
