Auditions for DEATHTRAP
at Brass Rail Players in Belleville, IL
Auditions for Ira Levin's "Deathtrap," the longest-running comedy thriller in Broadway history, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 19, and Monday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Lindenwood University's Belleville campus Auditorium.
A mystery with twists, turns and comic relief, "Deathtrap" will be presented by the Brass Rail Players at Lindenwood for eight performances, Nov. 4-7 and 11-14.
Roles are available for three men and two women. Director Janet Kuehn said adults, from college-age to senior citizens, are encouraged to audition. The audition will include cold readings from the script.
Sidney Bruhl is a successful Broadway playwright who hasn't had a hit in awhile. When a former student's brilliant play appears, Bruhl hatches a plot to kill ambitious Clifford Anderson and claim the work as his own. But his means of curing writer's block doesn't go as smoothly as planned.
Bruhl and his wife Myra live in upscale Westport, Conn., where a neighborhood psychic, Helga ten Dorp, warns Sidney of nefarious doings. What does she and his attorney, Porter Milgrim, know that he doesn't?
With its clever premise, witty dialogue, surprises, and intriguing cast of characters, "Deathtrap" was Levin's most successful stage work, running from 1978 to 1982. Levin also wrote the novels "Rosemary's Baby," "The Stepford Wives," and "The Boys from Brazil," which were adapted into hit movies.
The movie "Deathtrap," directed by Sidney Lumet, was released in 1982 starring Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve and Dyan Cannon. A revival of the play recently opened in London's West End, featuring Jonathan Groff ("Glee," "Spring Awakening"), Simon Russell Beale ("London Assurance), Claire Skinner, Terry Beaver and Estelle Parsons (Oscar winner for "Bonnie and Clyde," Tony winner for "August: Osage County").
