Whether you’ve seen the play, the 1950 film with Judy Holliday or the 1993 remake with Melanie Griffith, you’ll love this show. “Born Yesterday” written by Garson Kanin, premiered on Broadway in 1946 starring Judy Holliday. Harry Brock, an uncouth, corrupt and rich junk dealer brings his showgirl mistress with him to Washington DC. When Billie’s ignorance becomes a liability to Brock’s business dealings he hires a journalist, Paul Verrall to educate his girlfriend. In the process, Billie Dawn realizes how corrupt Harry is and begins interfering with his plans to bribe a Congressman into passing Legislation that would allow Brock’s businesses to make more money. The cast is composed of 10-12 men and 4 women of any age. We will cast thru cold readings, and no parts are pre-cast.

Auditions will be Sunday, June 23 and Monday the 24th at 7PM.
Rehearsals will be Sundays 2PM, Tuesdays and Thursday 7PM.
Tech week will be Sept 1 – 5 beginning at 6:30 each night.
Performances will be Sept 6,7,8 and 12,14,15.

The comedy is set in the upper-class, German-Jewish home of the Freitag family in Atlanta, Georgia. It is December 1939. Hitler has recently conquered Poland, Gone with the Wind is about to premiere, and Adolph Freitag, his sister Boo Levy, sister-in-law Reba and nieces Lala and Sunny are looking forward to Ballyhoo, a lavish cotillion sponsored by their country club at which the who’s-who of Southern Jews will be. Adolph’s new employee Joe Farkas is an attractive, eligible bachelor of an Eastern European Jewish family. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, he is familiar with prejudice but not with the possibility that a Jewish family would be so assimilated they would have a Christmas tree but not hold a Seder. These two worlds colliding provide comedy and some introspection by all the characters.

Boo Levy – 40s-50s, Adolph’s older sister and Lala’s mother. Her husband is dead, she runs her brothers household like a CEO at the same time struggling with wanting her daughter to be socially successful or at least marry into the “right” family.

Sunny Freitag – 20s, Reba’s daughter. A junior at the well-to-do liberal arts college Wellesley, Sunny is interested in the works of Eugene V. Debs and Upton Sinclair. She struggles with her Jewish identity, but faces this through her relationship with Joe.

Adolph Freitag – 40s-50s. A business man. Adores Sunny & Reba, but tolerates Boo & Lala. Adolph is a kind soul. While a successful business man, he is obviously not in control at home.

Lala Levy – 20s, Boo’s daughter. Obsessed with ‘Gone With The Wind.’ She is somewhat childish and awkward. Has great flights of fancy, but finds the realities of the world hard to deal with.

Reba Freitag – 40s-50s, sister-in-law to Adolph and Boo. Reba is somewhat simple, but is more shrewd than others give her credit.

Joe Farkas – 20s, Works for Adolph Freitag. Is smart, funny and forthright. He finds an intellectual match in Sunny, and challenges the family to reassess their ideas of identity and family.

Sylvan “Peachy” Weil – 20s, a visitor from Lake Charles, LA. While from one of the premiere Southern Jewish families, he is known for his obnoxious behavior and outspokenness.

AND THE REGIONAL PREMIERE OF HANDS ON A HARDBODY,
AUDITIONS ON OCTOBER 21 and 28

Open auditions for two shows, RENT and HANDS ON A HARDBODY, will be held on two Mondays nights, October 21 and 28, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., at the Washington University South Campus building (formerly CBC High School), 6501 Clayton Road, just east of Big Bend, in the second floor theatre. This is NOT on the Washington University main campus. Performers need to come to only one of the dates.

Both shows will run twelve performances over four weeks — Rent runs March 6-29, 2014, and Hands on a Hardbody runs May 29-June 21, 2014.

For Rent, New Line is looking for a multi-racial cast of 16 adult men and women — we are very eager to cast actors of color. We do not cast anyone under 17. We need intelligent singing actors who are willing to take risks onstage. Performers are asked to bring a prepared contemporary theatre song, preferably in rock or pop style, with printed piano music for our pianist (no tapes and no a cappella). Performers may also be asked to sing from the score.

For Hands on a Hardbody, New Line is looking for a multi-racial cast of 15 adult men and women — we are very eager to cast actors of color. We do not cast anyone under 17. We need intelligent singing actors who are willing to take risks onstage. Performers are asked to bring a prepared contemporary theatre song, preferably in rock or pop style, with printed piano music for our pianist (no tapes and no a cappella). Performers may also be asked to sing from the score.

Rehearsals for Rent will begin in early January and rehearsals for Hands on a Hardbody will begin in early April. Both shows will rehearse on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. for the first part of our process, and then on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings the last couple weeks, plus every night the week the show opens. Rehearsals are at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in St. Louis Hills. Performances are at the Washington University South Campus Theatre, 6501 Clayton Road. Performers will share a guaranteed 20% of box office receipts.

No appointments are necessary. All performers should arrive for the audition before 7:00 p.m. New Line is a non-union professional theatre company and is always very eager to find multi-racial casts.
