Synopsis: This 1950 play set in August 1945 in a small Southern town, adapted by the author from a 1946 novel, has been described as a “very funny, very dark” story on themes of racial and sexual identity and “why people exclude others and what happens when they do.”
Bernice Sadie Brown – A cook, is a stout, motherly Black woman with an air of great capability. She is about forty-five years old.
Frankie Addams – A gangling girl of twelve with blond hair cut like a boy’s. Frankie is a dreamy, restless girl with a rapt attention to her inward world of fantasy.
John Henry West – Frankie’s small cousin, aged seven. He is a delicate, active boy and wears gold-rimmed spectacles which give him an oddly judicious look.
Jarvis – Frankie’s brother. A good-looking lad of twenty-one wearing an army uniform. Jarvis is awkward when he first appears because this is his betrothal visit to his family.
Janice – Jarvis’s fiancée. She is a young, pretty, fresh-looking girl of eighteen or nineteen. She is charming but rather ordinary. She is dressed in her best clothes and is anxious to be liked by her new family.
Mr. Addams – Frankie’s father, is a deliberate and absent-minded man of about forty-five. A widower of many years, he has become set in his habits. There is about him an old-fashioned look and manner.
Mrs. West – John Henry’s mother. She is a vivacious, blonde woman of about thirty-three. She is dressed in sleazy, rather dowdy summer clothes.
Helen Fletcher – A young girl of thirteen or fourteen.
Doris – A young girl of thirteen or fourteen.
Sis Laura – An ancient Black woman, dressed in a clean print dress with several petticoats.
T. T. Williams – A large and pompous-looking Black man of about fifty. He is dressed like a church deacon, in a black suit with a red emblem in the lapel. His manner is timid and over-polite.
Honey Camden Brown – Honey is a slender, limber Black boy of about twenty. He is quite light in color and wears loud-colored, snappy clothes. He is very high-strung and volatile.
Barney MacKean – A boy of thirteen, wears a football suit, bright sweater and cleated shoes.
