By the Tony Award-winning authors of Falsettos, A New Brain is an energetic, sardonic, often comical musical about a composer during a medical emergency. Gordon collapses into his lunch and awakes in the hospital, surrounded by his maritime-enthusiast lover, his mother, a co-worker, the doctor, and the nurses. Reluctantly, he had been composing a song for a children’s television show that features a frog – Mr. Bungee – and the specter of this large green character and the unfinished work haunts him throughout his medical ordeal. What was thought to be a tumor turns out to be something more operable, and Gordon recovers, grateful for a chance to compose the songs he yearns to produce.
Those wishing to audition are asked to prepare 32 bars from a musical other than A New Brain. Please bring sheet music in your key and be prepared to sing up to 32 measures. An accompanist will be provided. A cappella auditions are not permitted. It is strongly recommended to be familiar with the show before auditioning. At check-in, those auditioning will select a monologue for a character of their choice from A New Brain to perform along with their audition song. (You will be reading the monologue from the page/sides will be provided.) If cast, you will be required to join Hawthorne Players, if not already a member, which requires a $20 dues payment for an individual or $30 for a family. Lastly, those wishing to audition may sign up for a time slot by visiting Hawthorne Players website at www.HawthornePlayers.com.
If you wish to audition and absolutely cannot make an audition time on Nov. 4, please contact director Stephen Peirick by email at firstname.lastname@example.org before Nov. 4 to discuss a possible video audition.
