PERFORMANCE DATES: Feb 24 & 25th, Mar 3, 4, & 5th, 2023, at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre
ROLES: 4 men, 3 women (All cast members will speak with British accents. Ages listed are for the characters, not the actors. If you can pass for an age, that’s all that counts)
ARTHUR BIRLING – (50’s – 60s) Patriarch of the family, businessman, wealthy, feels no shame or guilt for the poor treatment of the workers at his own factory. He’s elated that his daughter is marrying the son of a competetor and sees profit in the alliance. He is none too pleased to have his evening interrupted by the Inspector.
SYBIL BIRLING – (40’s – 60’s) – Matriarch of the family, comfortable, Feels very deserving of her station in life. She holds the belief that those who are struggling are only doing so because of their own faults.
SHEILA BIRLING – (18 – late 20’s) – Daughter of Arthur and Sybil, Engaged to Gerald, A bit spoiled, but becomes more sympathetic as the play progresses – Young, but of marrying age.
GERALD CROFT – (20’s – 30’s) – Engaged to Sheila, son of wealthy parents, skeptical of the inspector. He’s not a bad person, but a little smug and a bit naïve with some of his past actions.
ERIC BIRLING – (20’s – 30’s) – Son of Arthur and Sybil, a bit distant, has alcoholic tendancies, feels deep guilt for his past actions, keeps it mostly bottled up.
EDNA – (20’s – 40’s) – The Birling’s maid, an actual member of the working/lower class,(a.k.a. what the play is all about.) She’s been asked to stay late to serve the family during their engagement party.
INSPECTOR GOOLE – (Shouldn’t appear “young”, but otherwise age is unimportant) – The Inspector at first appears to be a typical English Inspector staight out of a English detective story. As the play progresses he becomes more mysterious. He brings the news of Eva Smith’s death and makes it his business to find out the reason for what happened. There is more to the Inspector than it appears.

SYNOPSIS: “An Inspector Calls” is set in the home of the Birling family. The Birlings are a very well-to-do family, successful business owners, living in a pre-World War England. They live their lives in their usual way, with little concern or worry, until one night they are visited by the mysterious Inspector Goole.
A girl is dead. Her name was Eva Smith. The Inspector has questions and the Birlings may be at the center of it all.
In one sense it is a play of interrogation with an inspector questioning various “suspects.” In another sense, however, it is not a “whodunit.” The “Who” is of less importance than the “Why.”
Why is Eva Smith dead? That’s the question.
Come see “An Inspector Calls” to find out.
REHEARSALS: Rehearsals will begin in early January of 2023, two or three times per week. All actors will not be required at every rehearsal.
