THE RED THREAD: adoption story

Website URL Ella Jin Eckert's Films

Logline: When 8-year-old Lily, a curious Chinese adoptee, is asked to create a family tree for school, she embarks on a heartfelt quest to connect the dots of her identity — all while trying to capture the attention of her overworked adoptive mother Jen, whose husband is away for work, revealing the delicate bonds and unspoken hopes woven between them.

Jen (30-50, White): A devoted adoptive mother juggling a demanding full-time job and solo parenting while her husband is often away for work. Warm and caring but visibly tired and stretched thin, Jen struggles to balance work and family life while trying to stay emotionally present for her curious daughter.

Ms. Gold (20-50, white): Kind and attentive, the teacher encourages her students to explore their family histories with warmth and sensitivity. She fosters a supportive classroom environment where children feel safe to ask questions about identity and belonging.

Students (6-10, any ethnicity): They are Lily’s peers in Ms. Gold’s class. Two actors will have a few lines.

Planning to shoot in March 7, 8, and 14 2026

Students and Ms. Gold only needed the 7th. Jen will be needed for the 8th and 14th.
