amateur actors of all ages in small town community theatre
AUDITIONS FOR TWAIN’S IS HE DEAD? will be held February 11 and 12, 2019 at the Historical Capitol Theatre Building, 202 South Main Street in Waterloo, Illinois. Performance dates: 7:30 pm April 5-7 and 12-14, 2019. Sunday matinees staged at 2:30 pm on April 7 and 14.
The comedy, based on a play by Mark Twain, lampoons greed, deception, languages, and art critics.Twain’s humor includes techniques known to comedians: absurdity, analogy, hyperbole, farce, irony, parody, puns, wordplay, satire, slapstick, understatement and prat falls.
Is He Dead? focuses on the real-life famous French painter, Jean-Francois Millet. A fictionalized character for the play, Millet is persuaded to fake his death; the value of his paintings will skyrocket after his demise.
Millet impersonates his imaginary sister to collect the anticipated wealth and the ruse grows more absurd, the plot becomes entangled, love gushes and wanes, and the nonsense continues until it erupts in a glorious moment when Millet is caught dancing in drag on his own coffin.
The script requires four women and seven men, and three cameos double cast. The characters range from age twenty plus to seventy plus for both genders. The physical comedy requires younger actors to be energetic, strong, and vigorous—two of the senior women and senior gentlemen not so much.
MASC is a non-profit community theater company. All participation is by volunteers. No actors, directors or production crew are paid.
Audition Process: Please prepare a two to three minute comedic monologue, a story or a joke; include gestures and movement. An original two to three minute stand-up is welcome—content should be appropriate—no offensive language, please. Do not risk offending anyone with language or sexually graphic content. Secondly, auditions will require readings from the script. It is expected that actors come prepared. No roles are pre-cast. Actors not prepared with a monologue can audition, but will likely be penalized in casting.
Accents: The principals need accents: French, British, German and Irish. It is not expected that accents be accurate. Resumes and headshots accepted, but not required. Forms will be competed at the audition. There are two dates for auditions: you are not required to come to both, but you are welcome if you choose to attend both for a second audition.
